Out of their element...

It's interesting when you talk to your students outside of class. I had a really pleasant conversation with one of my students who had serious attendance issues. She recognizes her problems and has made some changes to address her credit situation for this coming fall.

It's interesting since she works so hard when she's here but what kills her is that she's only in class like 1 or 2 days out of the week. I suppose her father will crack down on her in the fall should she live with her father.

Some of my students are full of shit. They act "ghetto" and "gangsta" when they've never even seen or been anywhere near either. I don't understand it. I suppose I didn't crave that sort of attention in high school so I can't really relate to that.

Most of my kids are awesome, but there's always some rotten apples. At least they don't ruin the rest of the bunch. Many students learn to ostracize the rotten ones in class. I suppose they're also sick of their constant cries for attention. Earning the sympathy of the caring majority has saved me in several cases where the single student who doesn't give a damn tries to ruin the class. Students really do care about their grades, they may come off as the type that doesn't give a damn but they really don't want to fail. It's the ones who really don't care that end up messing up the dynamic of the class.

I went book shopping as usual. There aren't very many bookstores in the Bronx. I got a few children's books on biology that could prove useful. Those "Eyewitness" books are pretty awesome for kids of this age.

I'm going to go take a nap now... :)
