Letter from the Chancellor...

Dear Colleagues,

Yesterday, the United Federation of Teachers thanked you for your role in helping New York City’s students succeed this school year with a full-page ad in the New York Times. I wholeheartedly agree that New York City’s teachers deserve an enormous “thank you,” and I would like to join the UFT in thanking you for your hard work and your dedication to the students of our City.

This year, New York City students made record progress in math and in English. Today, because of what’s happening in classrooms across our City, more students are meeting and exceeding State standards and our students are catching up to students in wealthy suburban districts in the rest of New York State. Black and Hispanic students are also catching up to their white and Asian peers, and Special Education students and English Language Learners are making record gains.

We have a lot of work ahead of us, but what you have helped students accomplish is a victory for teachers, students, and all New Yorkers. Thank you for establishing high expectations—and for working so hard every day to help our students achieve their best. Congratulations and I wish you a successful conclusion of a great school year.

Sincerely,

Joel I. Klein
Chancellor
