Where's the Science in Children's TV?!

Whatever happened to shows like Bill Nye The Science Guy or The Magic School Bus?

They're either on at hours when students are clearly not watching or the show does not air anymore... I love Bill Nye's show because he made science palatable and reasonably interesting with his demonstrations. What I also admired as a child was that he recruited YOUNG ASSISTANTS: Kids participating in the science (also exemplified in Ms. Frizzle's class).

I mean we have MythBusters and Smash Lab but they don't really involve the youth of America in their experiments. There really isn't much of an interest nor is there a desire for students to generate a personal interest in participating in such experiments. We've essentially alienated students from watching and understanding science by creating these shows that grown adults can appreciate but younger students couldn't relate to.

I mean how can a child relate to a bunch of special effects engineers? They CAN'T. They'd rather play video games than even consider designing their own home experiments. I mean seriously, how tempting is it as a kid to take a fire extinguisher and experiment at home the notion of propulsion rather than watching experts blow up a car or destroy airplanes?

I mean the closest thing we have to Bill Nye is Neil deGrasse Tyson on NOVA and he basically interviews people, talks about stuff, and animates things. There's still limited youth involvement in his show.
