The Death of Democracy

The Panel for Educational Policy is a body of 13 individuals.  5 of these members are appointed by each of the borough presidents.  The remaining 8 are appointed by the mayor himself.

In what way is this democratic?  In what way does a 5 to 8 vote on any measure that doesn't agree with the mayor constitute educational justice?  It doesn't.

I've learned last year that whatever the mayor says, goes.  It doesn't really matter if what he has to offer would run schools into the ground so long as he has the option to start over by hitting the reset button called the PEP.

It has been an interesting and depressing time watching the department of education try to flounder its way through the school closure process.  It seems like the city and the department of education wants only to expedite this process rather than actually consider the community impact that closing/reshuffling/reorganizing schools has on the communities they serve.

I doubt that anything will change in terms of school closures.  Ms. Black seems very enthusiastic to continue the work that Klein started.  But we shall see, it will be an informative month for all of us...
