Perceptions on Life

It is a very common perception that life is one of the miracles of nature.

I adamantly disagree.  Life is hardly a miracle, if anything, it is inevitable.

I can understand the perception that life is miraculous in the sense that we value and cherish life (for whatever personal reasons we may have). However the contradiction lies in the accomplishments of the living, which range from greatness to terror and genocide.

In this context it doesn't seem to make sense to say that life is a miracle.  It makes more sense to say that life is inevitable.  On the floating blue sphere we call home, there is little reason to believe that something we cherish as well as abuse and take advantage of on a regular basis is something miraculous.

Perhaps when you consider how difficult it was for us to have evolved into what we are today then I may consider the miraculous notion of life.  But it's difficult for me to accept that perception when the struggle for survival is the unpredictable variable that determines the destiny of the living.

It's amazing what sorts of philosophical discussions you can have with students.

Memorable student response: "You know what's miraculous, mista?  Marijuana!"
