NPR: Flying Rhinos

I'd have to agree with this article that this is something you probably wouldn't expect to see in the course of a normal day.  A Flying Rhino!

I thought this was a really interesting method of translocating rhinos from dangerous situations to new areas that are not as heavily poached.

I was wondering how they would set the animal down though...  Would seem a bit odd landing on your horn or on your back.  I can definitely understand the blindfold, I would probably go nuts in their position if I were fully aware of what was going on.

Yay conservation! Save those rhinos!

Enjoy!

Update:  Earlier today on November 11, 2011

I just read that the Black Rhino has been declared extinct...  They say that the reasoning is because of the extremely lax poaching laws.  These laws are described in such a way that even though people are caught poaching rhinos, they are let go the same day...  This is really sad.

Conservation is not a joke.  We need to minimize our negative impact on neighboring populations.  Animals like the black rhino don't deserve the sort of treatment they have received...  And now we may never see them in the wild ever again.  There are some left in captivity but re-releasing them back into the wild has apparently never been that successful...

What a tragedy.  :(
