I had a moment in class today where I went up the escalator of hell.
Student was warned in class to stop talking since he was having trouble copying notes on the board as the slides were passing. So in his frustration (mind you he's still talking and trying to copy notes which is just slowing him down) he gets angry that I keep continuing when he's one of the only ones left writing.
He turns verbally combative and abusive. I was mildly irritated from a previous class since the other class just couldn't shut the hell up and one student who has a parole officer just creates a nightmare in the classroom so I wrote him up and told him I'll give his referral to his PO so he walked out. So my mannerism was calm but noticeably irritated. It's surprising what these kids can figure out about how your day is going. I'm generally very stoic so not many students know what I'm thinking or feeling but they've learned the past couple of semesters when I'm mad. Anyway, back to this student...
So he gets even more angry, while I'm still standing there and then he starts dropping the f-bomb. Now this is where it just goes straight to hell. I warn him again that he should really just calm down and that I don't want to write up anymore students today since it's been a long day but he persists and decides that he doesn't give a shit about whether or not he gets written up. So I end my lesson towards the end of class and start writing up a referral for him.
As I'm writing the referral, he continues to throw vulgar comments. He calls me a faggot and a bitch and yada yada yada. As he's saying these things, I write them down word for word and he knows it so he continues throwing me compliments.
At the end of the period he starts throwing racial slurs on top of that so I go back to my desk and add those to my list of famous compliments. So as he's leaving he throws over a desk with books on it and walks around throwing desks over and stuff before he stomps out of the room.
All this over not being able to keep his mouth shut during class. It's like the cold war, but somebody actually drops the bomb at the end. Ideally they get steammed and come back the next day angry or something but this was just not the day for that.
I don't know. It's shit like this that makes me wonder what the fuck I'm doing for these kids. It just goes to show that nobody is ever satisfied. The ones who wait patiently get screwed since they want to cover more material, and the others who don't give a damn or are just not motivated to keep up ruin it for the rest of them. I guess it's just another one of those days...
