"Black in America" Part II

Cry me a fucking river.

I hate when ignorance is used as an excuse for ending up in prison AFTER dropping out of high school. You have to drop out of school and then go to prison to realize that doing well in school was your best chance at succeeding in life? You have to be fucking kidding me. Why don't you listen to half the things your teachers say in the first place? I feel like many of my students don't trust my judgment that if they do the things I ask, it will make them better and smarter individuals rather than stooping to chaos in the classroom.

If that is truly the case, I have a list of students to send to prison right now. It is actually painful for me to admit but it's true. If that's what it takes for them to realize that they have to sit down and do work to be successful later in life then so be it.

I also find it interesting though not far-fetched about the poor image that successful blacks end up facing from the other blacks in their community. I mean seriously, it's better to have friends and fail your classes as a black student than to have higher grades and face alienation from your race? Are you kidding me? It's like you've been brain-washed into thinking that black=failure and white=successful. Let's all alienate the intelligent and articulate blacks in our community by making them feel like they betrayed their culture. It's an interesting strategy to try to better your race by stooping to mediocrity and mocking the successful.

I see a lot of talk and not a lot of action. High need minorities are very capable but when you come to class and you give what you think is your best effort and all you did was write your name down then you're going to fail. It's not because you're black, it's because I have nothing to grade. You're not proving a point that I'm racist by doing no work. You're simply reinforcing the negative stereotype about your race.

It's ironic because a lot of my students take great pride in their possessions and their image when once they face the real world, their image means nothing to their boss. And then they wonder why they can't find work even with a high school diploma and some college credits (aside from shitty and racist employers). It is so easy to tell how seriously you took your education during an interview that I wouldn't be surprised if many educated black job candidates were turned down legitimately for poor credentials.

Shocking Statistics:
* 60% of black men who drop out of school end up in prison.
* 1 out of 3 young black men will face prison time in their life.
* Black men are less likely to get a job than a white felon.
* The number one killer of black women 25-34 is AIDS.
* 1 out of 3 newly diagnosed HIV patients are black women.

I am watching this program after reading your posts. It is so frustrating to see that there is so much, SO MUCH opportunity like being in your or my class, that is just wasted. When my students sit in the back, smell like pot and just break the pencil that I just gave them to take notes, my gut tells me to yell at them the question, "Do you want to go to prison?! Do you know what it's like in prison? Do you know how good you have it?" It is so frustrating to see them piss away their lives before my eyes. It begs the question: What do I do to stop that?
