After reviewing the school calendar this coming year. I can already tell when students aren't going to show up. It's silly that they give days in the middle of the week off. What do expect these kids to do when they have a Thursday off, show up Friday?! HA! Good luck with that.
I know that many of these holidays are Jewish holidays. But I'd bet top dollar that the only people who observe Jewish holidays are faculty and staff. For my school at least, all our students are either black of hispanic so they won't be observing Yom Kippur or Rash Hashanah.
Oh well, maybe I'll put assessments on those days to enforce attendance issues. Seriously, these kids think that attendance is optional. If you're not in class, then you're fucked. Good luck in whatever college environment you think you can survive in with this sort of mentality.
I feel like DeVry programs and the military are actually good alternatives for these students who don't excel academically. I mean students aren't thrilled to put their lives on the line by joining the military but they wouldn't put their lives on the line for anything since they don't have the maturity to stand up for anything meaningful, even if a war on terror is baloney.
Maybe I should start looking towards outreach rather than ostracism. If students don't perform in class, instead of leaving them to figure out for themselves that they're never going to succeed in academia, refer them to these programs of vocation. We'll see how that idea flies with administrators though...
