After a week or so of considering possible living abroad opportunities, it's actually become a realistic and viable option. I know that I'm not going anywhere in the immediate future, not for about another year or so but I'm thinking that once my commitment to the fellows runs out that I'll teach abroad for about a year or so.
I was looking at Australia since it was actually very easy to start the application process at this moment, I've already submitted my CV and filled out some of the background information to their applications. All I need are references and an updated resume. I don't know how my administrators are going to react to this but I'm sure they won't throw too much of a fuss since they'll just get another fellow to replace me.
After thinking about teaching abroad, I had an interesting idea of sorts to basically teach where the world cup will be. So I'll teach for like 4 years in a host nation then move to the next host nation. Though this coming world cup is in South Africa, I am not entirely sure about tackling South Africa as my first teaching abroad experience. It's an entertaining idea but I doubt that a life designed to travel from venue to venue every four years is all that good of an idea... Or is it...
But at this point, my cross-hairs are set on the land down under. The question now is whether to go rural or not since most positions are in the middle of nowhere in the outback. I guess I wouldn't mind except I have little to no faith in my outdoor survival skills, especially in the outback (where they have some of the most dangerous wildlife on Earth). It brings to mind all the moments that Steve Irwin gets bitten, scratched, stung or something. I guess it'd be similar, except I wouldn't limit my profanity to "Crikey!"
I've reached that point in my life where I need to just get the hell out of America and see what's out there.
