There's a severe lack of community interest in schools. The only real outreach to schools like mine are from non-profit organizations. I have been scrambling lately to get more of these organizations to provide some of their services to the school for one reason or another.
It's ridiculous since parents are not very active in the community they are generally okay with allowing schools to do everything for their kids.
Society sets these kids up for failure by denying them things like basic sports equipment for after school games or something. Shit, invest in a bucket of baseballs, gloves, and bats and you've got yourself a game.
Donorschoose has been a great site to ask for things but it's such a distant and impersonal way to contribute to the community. It's like giving somebody $20 for their birthday rather than a thoughtful gift. I mean I know that they sort of give us what we want or need but it's not like they're hand-delivering these things, they just pay for it and expect praise.
The Bronx Community Health Network got back to me and they're going to call me back about that community health adviser position. I can feel the extra responsibilities already starting to pile up...
Tomorrow I'm going to practice with the soccer team. They're not particularly that good. But we'll develop where they need the most work. Endurance is a big problem and a lack of field awareness is a big problem.
It'll be weird bringing my soccer gear to school, it feels like I'm back in high school...
