It interesting when you realize how small the world is when you grow up in the Bronx.
Many of my students are not idiots. They're really intelligent, however, they don't exercise the same common sense that I usually do.
I was talking to a number of students about where they get their news from and they usually just read the local papers for random happenings in NYC but they rarely ever read about anything going on nationwide or even internationally.
Perhaps there should be an emphasis on current events in every curricula. I could only wish that students who enter my class are in some sense well-rounded, but that may be asking too much from this community. If only...
The eve of election day is upon us and it's that time of year to bust out the political policies of each candidate and to scrutinize every letter. I'll be asking students what they think about Obama and McCain in terms of a number of issues: health care, education, environment, and research. I could only hope that there's more of an emphasis on research and development to help boost our struggling economy...
I might get in trouble with the union if I endorse anybody but I'm not planning on endorsing a candidate but have the students determine for themselves who's the best candidate for the country.
Let's see how this turns out...
