Letter from the Chancellor...

Dear Colleagues,

I am happy to report that New York City had the most schools—by far—of any city in the country on US News & World Report’s list of America’s best high schools that came out this month. The annual report analyzes more than 21,000 public high schools in 48 states. For 2008, the report found that 7 New York City high schools were in the top 50 high schools nationally and 9 New York City schools were in the top 100 nationally.

Obviously, we have many successful schools that were not highlighted on this list, but it’s always a wonderful honor when our schools deserve recognition for helping prepare students for college. We should all be proud that our schools are helping students succeed—and that we are providing New York City public school students with such great options.

I’d like to congratulate the City schools that received this distinction:

* Stuyvesant High School in Manhattan
* High School of American Studies at Lehman College in the Bronx
* High School for Dual Language and Asian Studies in Manhattan
* Staten Island Technical High School in Staten Island
* Bronx High School of Science in the Bronx
* The Baccalaureate School for Global Education in Queens
* Queens High School of Science at York College in Queens
* Brooklyn Technical High School in Brooklyn
* Townsend Harris High School in Queens

Good work. I look forward to growing even more competitive in the years to come.

Sincerely,

Joel I. Klein
Chancellor

* Only 9 of NYC's high schools made a national list. Uhh... That's kind of meaningless especially when NYC has over a thousand high schools.
