As a new teacher now in the seventh month of the school year, I'm sure you've shared quite a few school stories with your family and friends -- stories about the joys and frustrations of teaching in New York City, about your students and your administration, about the difficulties in using your school's photocopier, that time you had to scramble to cover a class, or how you found out about the snow day.
We want to hear your stories too!
At the UFT we regularly feature the voices and perspectives of 1st- and 2nd-year teachers in our biweekly newspaper, the New York Teacher, and our blog, edwize.org (where we also post stories from 3rd- and 4th-year teachers).
Since 2005, new teachers like you have been sharing their classroom stories with UFT members and the wider world in our "New Teacher Diaries" -- personal and engaging accounts of real challenges and triumphs, large and small, that give readers a glimpse of the things you do every day.
We need you to help keep the diaries fresh and exciting. Plus, we're close to launching a redesigned Edwize, and we need new writers to complement our new look!
Your entry would first appear as a blog posting on edwize.org. Every two weeks the best posting is reprinted in the New York Teacher, and the writer gets $150!
The diary entries are always anonymous to protect the author and her students and to encourage candor.
Check out some recent New Teacher Diaries:
The Fairest of Them All
A Time and a Place
The Kindness of Strangers
If you’d like to write for us, please e-mail me at wlevay@uft.org with an idea or two for your diary entry, and a little about yourself -- your school, what subject you teach, and the number of years that you have been teaching in the New York City public school system. I’ll get back to you right away.
I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Bill Levay
