Data Data Data

I always found that data is one of those mysterious things that people look at and aren't quite sure what it means (myself included). Here I have located the local statistical data through the NY Public Library on local areas around my school.

Granted these numbers are quite old, local census data is gathered from decade to decade (which I found weird since the national census data is gathered annually) so there's really not as much you can get from this information until the 2010 census comes out.

What's really interesting is when you compare this community to the general American population using the US Census Bureau Data Tools (the one I use is the FactFinder, which can be located here).

So to compare the community educational statistics (ages 25 and over) to the national statistics can be a bit tricky since the local statistics are not about educational attainment but are cumulative educational achievement. The national statistics are about exclusive individual achievement so the highest level of education achieved. But even so, for a local community's cumulative statistics to dwindle to a nation's exclusive statistics is a bit staggering...

This local community has a composition of fewer than 10% college graduates. The nation's educational attainment for bachelor's degrees or higher is 27% (17% bachelor's and 10% achieving higher degrees).
