CDC: School Violence?

Who would have thought the CDC conducted research in the area of school violence? They happen to have an extensive array of resources and data on the matter. The thoroughness does not surprise me, but the notion that they conducted such research is a bit surprising to me.

I wonder if the UFT/DOE cites the CDC when they make the school safety policies...?

There are even links from this site on electronic aggression, or internet bullying/harassment. Interesting...

Some fun facts I pulled from one of their publications (if you were too lazy to check it out yourself):
  1. Approximately 38% of public schools reported at least one incident of violence to police during 2005-2006.
  2. In 2005, 24% of students reported gangs at their schools.
  3. Students in urban schools were more likely to report gang activity than suburban and rural students (no surprise there, right?).
  4. From 2003-2004, 10% of teachers in city schools reported that they were threatened with injury by students, compared with 6% of teachers in suburban schools, and 5% in rural schools.
Here are some interesting responses to a 2005 nationwide survey conducted of 9-12th grade students:
  1. 6.5% of students carried a weapon on school property in the 30 days preceding the survey.Weapons included a gun, knife, or club.
  2. 7.9% of students were threatened or injured with a weapon on school property in the 12 months preceding the survey.
  3. 13.6% of students were involved in a physical fight on school property in the 12 months preceding the survey.
  4. 8.4% of students attempted suicide one or more times in the 12 months preceding the survey.
  5. 25.4% of students were offered, sold, or given an illegal drug on school property in the 12 months preceding the survey
