I sometimes wonder what the meaning is of allowing public schools to take days off for holidays that students don't celebrate nor do they even understand.
If we really have an issue with students not spending enough time in the classroom then perhaps we should re-evaluate these holidays that really only the faculty and staff actually celebrate.
Granted, there may be schools where the population of students would warrant a school closure for the holiday, however if nobody really celebrates the holiday then you have to wonder what the purpose is of taking the day off.
I have nothing against people who celebrate religious holidays and taking the necessary time from work/school to do so, however, it does not seem practical to celebrate these holidays in areas where the population of students are behind in their education and they do not actually celebrate anything other than the day off from school.
I mean as a teacher it sort of hurts to think this way since I always appreciate any day off I get but I sometimes wonder if taking a day off is truly what's in the best interest of our kids who really do need that extra seat time.
