The Brain Observatory: Cool Brain Stuff

Here's an interesting blog that's actually a live feed of a lab that is taking a microtome and generating cross sections of a human brain.

When I first saw this I was a bit amused at the irony since we think of lab animals being caged up in the lab but I thought the lab techs were like lab animals cooped up in their lab.

I've worked with microtomes before and it's a long and tedious process and I can't imagine this process ending too soon with where they are in the brain. You can't really miss too many sections otherwise you lose data or images. There is a lot of patience to exercise and your hands can get really cold...

Ugh, memories...

Update: 12-7-09

Apparently, they've finished sectioning the entire brain... It only took them 2401 slices... But if there's one thing you learn in histo-analysis, it's that it'll take a while... But the final product should be pretty awesome.
