Parent teacher conferences are on-going. A former student of mine, a freshman, is having trouble coping with their emotional and academic issues.
For some, life is just too much to handle all at once. There is a lot that some of these young teens have to shoulder by themselves.
The nature of their own home lives create the added drama that really strains the emotional will power of some of the most resilient of students.
In response to this, I have introduced to this student the therapeutic nature of blogging as a method of venting the issues that make life difficult both at home and at school. The blog we created for this purpose is not visible to the public, but I find that it does serve a purpose on multiple levels: improving the typing skills, possibly improving their writing, and even developing the ability to express oneself through a language they struggle with.
To put the intangible emotions that we have into words is probably the hardest thing that any human being can do. Just think about how to express your deepest frustrations or your most intimate of emotional experiences in such a way that it is legible and rational... It's a very important skill, not just for school, but for one's own sanity.
I can only hope that this yields some positive results...
