Insufficient Funds

Teachers are regularly short-changed when it comes to supplying their own classrooms. My first year in a classroom set me back over $3000 with the technology investments and all these other unforeseen investments.

This year, they've cut teacher's choice compensation to $110. I've already spent that money on my classroom materials that will only last a couple of months. I can't understand this notion that students and parents are not held responsible for supplying their children with supplies to go to school. I mean a notebook and writing utensil are typically the minimum (and cost less than $3).

It's a bad sign when you have to find ways to save money from check to check to supply your own classroom with basic materials.

FYI to new teachers: schools are supposed to provide basic school supplies (chalk, paper, grade books, etc.) for your classrooms (they usually include it in their budgets). But as budgets get cut this year, expect more of these things to be paid for out of your own pocket.
