There's a site that provides students with online access to living environment labs. Though they boast that they complete lab minutes to satisfy the Regents mandate, I find it hard to accept that the future lab skills of high school students will be learned through a mouse and keyboard (does that mean I'm old-fashioned?).
I know that the labs that the state require don't necessarily require lab skills, but they do ask procedural questions about how to use equipment like a microscope that you can't really learn from a computer screen. You sort of need to handle it yourself to get the gist of it.
Though I have asked for an on-site demo by the site administrator who has announced that they will be making stops across NYC sometime, I have opened up a canister of my patented science-teacher skepticism. Perhaps this will be the next big thing for our students, perhaps it will be a complete waste of time and money on the part of the school. We'll see.
