On Thursday, Mayor Bloomberg will release his executive budget proposal. In it, there will be drastic cuts that would harm our city’s most vulnerable citizens, first and foremost children. We will be protesting in response in all five boroughs. I urge you to join us and to ask your colleagues, friends and neighbors to join us, too.
Thursday, May 5, 4:30 p.m. Download the flier for your borough on the UFT website.
The city has a $3.1 billion surplus, but the mayor wants to lay off 4,700 teachers and cut 16,500 child care slots. These cuts are outrageous and completely unnecessary.
The only people that the mayor’s budget would spare are the very people who could afford to give back: Wall Street bankers and other millionaires.
None of us would allow the kids in our classroom to pick on other kids because they are weak. We must not allow the adults who run our city to do it either. On May 5 we will stand up and speak out for our children, our schools and our future.
Thank you for all that you do every day — inside and outside the classroom — to protect the children of our city.
Sincerely,
Michael Mulgrew
