Dear colleagues,
The UFT has filed legal papers with the state Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) asking it to declare impasse, charging the Department of Education with walking away from negotiations that would have brought additional funding and support to dozens of New York City schools.
Instead of coming to an agreement with us on an evaluation system that would help teachers improve their skills and enhance our classrooms, the mayor and the DOE have decided to play politics and close schools. We have asked PERB to intervene and force them back to the bargaining table.
Since Mayor Bloomberg has decided to use smokescreens to hide his decade of disastrous leadership over our public schools, we are encouraging all members to call 311. Tell the mayor to stop bashing teachers, start taking responsibility for not properly supporting schools and help us give children the quality education they deserve.
Sincerely,
Michael Mulgrew
UFT President
My 2 cents...
Bloomberg is the worst example of a leader I have ever seen.
Leaders take responsibility for their shortcomings and their failures at some point. Hell even George W. Bush took responsibility for Katrina after they fumbled around with whether or not to evacuate or assign the appropriate personnel to assist New Orleans.
Bloomberg on the other hand has demonstrated no accountability of his own. How does one take all the credit for smoke and dagger numbers and data (higher test scores...?, higher graduation rates...?) then blame classroom educators for all the failures of the system? Because Bloomberg is a terrible leader.
It just goes to show how terrible of a leader he is when even George W. Bush has more humility to admit when he screwed up more than Bloomberg has ever admitted.
All this talk of Bloomberg running for president in the future is so short-sighted. I wish people took a step back and actually evaluated his record as the "education" mayor of NYC. That's all people need to know about him as a presidential candidate.
This issue alone should convince even Bloomberg himself that he can't buy his way into the Oval office the way he did with the Mayor's office.
Unbelievable.
